How Should A Back Problem With Acute Vertebral Injury Be Treated?

I have a bad back problem. 3 vertabrae are injured beyond repair. They want to do a fusion but I do not want this. My Chiropractor is currently trying inversion therapy with me. I have tried all sorts of drugs, ice packs, back brace etc. The pain is not so much in my back as in the surrounding muscles. My ankles get very swollen. The inversion therapy today left me in agony. I just don't know what to do and my quality of life has changed so much that I am getting very depressed.
