How Should Menstrual Cycle Be Tracked?

I m tracking my period and I had blood whne I pee last night starting at 6pm but only when I pee. Do I consider that as Day 1? When I went to bed, I did put my menstrual cup in and when I woke up at 8am today (17 Aug) it was full. So what is my Day 1. Yestarday or Today? Thanks.

Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.

By what you explain I would say that the first day of your period is yesterday (the day you noticed the blood when you pee).
Calculating and using the fist day of last menstrual period is useful in 28 days menstrual cycles when the cycles are regular.
There are many days that can be calculated from the last menstrual period day like day of ovulation, when to expect the next period and if you get pregnant the day of expected delivery date. Even though we try to use this to give us some idea it is generally not sharply cut and deviations are common.
1. it is certain the day of your last menstrual period is the day you saw blood while peeing (the day before you saw the filled cup)
2. If you would like to use the day of your last menstrual period as an orientation date to calculate other happenings than you might need to consider that it is not sharply cut, some deviation from calculations is usual and we might need other means to use to verify future happenings or interventions- you will need to speak with your doctor if specific, sure dates are needed.

Hope this is helpful and answers to your question

Best Regards,

Dr Antoneta
