How Should Thumb Bite Swelling With Pus And Pain Be Treated?

My husband came home from hunting today with a bite on his thumb. In the past eight hours it has swollen significantly and looks as if there is pus in it. We tried to lance it but it hurt him too much to push on it...any idea of what could have bit him and what we should to do treat it?
