How Successful Is A Lateral Meniscus Repair?

my son is 16 and an MRI shows a lateral menicus tear, or at least that is what the doc says...he won't know the severity of it until he scopes it. My son is entering his senior year and loves to play football and was looking forward to another All Conference year and possible college offers. He is telling me to cut out the tear so he can be ready for football in August. I am thinking about his health and his knee 30 yrs down the road. How successful is a lateral menicus repair. I have heard from others that it will tear again just by the simplest thing and then they have to remove it anyways. Can I get someones point of view on this. Thanks.
