How To Ascertain That The Rib Is Broken?

My wife was putting her son in the car seat. Her foot slipped off the rail board and her stomach right side hit the cup holder on the car seat. She is have several bruises appear on the right side of her torso. She is in pain and uncomfortable. However, I do not believe she has a broken rib. Please Advise.
