How To Confirm Ear Damage?

My grandson has a bb pistol type gun that he plays with that has no bb s.but does have the air pressure & pop sound. He was playing with my husband and shot it into his ear. My husband said it sounded like a train horn blowing in his ear for the longest and now it feels like its stopped completely up. Could this have done permanent nerve damage and what should he do for it?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history of BB type pistol shot without any pellets but still has air pressure, feeling like a long distance train horn blowing in ear, and completely stopped, wants to know whether this can cause permanent nerve damage.
Such typer of injusry is called air pressure injury or acoustic trauma and the type can be confirmed by consulting an ENT Surgeon.
Ear endoscopy to see if the ear drum has traumatic perforation or not.
Audiometry to decide the hearing loss.
In most of the cases the things improve well on simple treatment as follows:
Not to instil anything in ear.
Multivitmains nd mineral to aid healing.
Do not blow the nse at all.A course of an anti-inflammatory medicine.
Regular review.
In case of an acoustic trauma to the cochlea it may take long.
Such injuries do not cause permanent nerve damage as such but the apparatus in cochlea can have the problems and may take a long time as there is no specific treatment as of now.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
