Hi,

Abdominal cramps, altered bowel habits, etc. symptoms can be seen during the premenstrual period also. Minor fluctuations in the menstrual cycles can be seen frequently, and usually menstrual cycles with the length of 21 to 35 days can be considered as a normal only. It is better to go for a blood test for pregnancy, which can give more accurate result compared with a urine pregnancy test even immediately after the missed period.

If serum beta HCG levels in the blood test are less than 5 mIU/mL it rules out the possibility of pregnancy, levels between 5 to 25 mIU/mL indicates the possibility of pregnancy and levels above 25 mIU/mL confirms the possibility of pregnancy. If the test gives a negative result, you can wait and watch and you may get the periods soon. Meanwhile, you can take symptomatic treatment for irritable bowel syndrome.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
