How To Confirm Pregnancy?

I am 12 days late getting my period. I've always been regular and on time. I had unprotected sex 9 days before I was due. Ever since me due date I've been having odd abdominal cramps and starting to get tired now more than usual. I have taken 2 pregnancy test but both were negative, should I get a blood test?

Hi,

As you had unprotected intercourse and as your previous menstrual cycles were regular with 12 day delay of present period the possibility of pregnancy cannot be completely excluded. Usually ovulation is expected between the 13th to the 18th day of menstrual cycle in case of regular 28 to 30 days length of menstrual cycles, but sometimes a little delay and ovulation can be seen and that can lead to conception.

Abdominal cramps and tiredness can be seen during the premenstrual phase also as part of premenstrual syndrome due to the fluctuation of the reproductive hormone levels. But to be on safe side, better to go for a blood test for pregnancy, which can give more accurate result compared with a urine pregnancy test kit. If the serum beta HCG levels in the blood test shows less than 5 mIu/mL the possibility of pregnancy is can be ruled out and you may get periods soon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
