How To Cure Folliculitis On The Scalp?

I was diagnosed with folliculitis on my scalp. I am on a antiobiotic, which has removed most of the burning and itching. I still burn and itch a little at night. Why is that? I am losing a lot of hair and afraid of going bald. My scalp still looks red in places. Will the itching and burning cause my hair to continue to fall out? Is there any hope that I will not lose all of my hair? I go back to the dermatologist this next week but feel like I am not doing enough to stop this from progressing and that it is a race against time to not lose all of my hair.

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I would keep a possibility of Seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp with scalp folliculitis.

Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is an important cause of scalp itching and increased hair shedding. Dandruff is bound to recur again, therefore people with dandruff should use an antidandruff shampoo to keep the dandruff under check, rather than using a regular shampoo.

If I was your treating doctor I would have asked you to use an antidandruff lotion/shampoo. My choice is 2% ketoconazole shampoo, thrice weekly for 2-4 weeks followed by once or twice weekly for maintenance. It is available OTC as Nizral 2% solution.

For scalp folliculitis, a week of oral antibiotics may be required, as already been given to you
