How To Detect A Fracture In The Ankle?

A few weeks ago i was hit in the ankle. There was a lot of swelling and bruising, and now there is just a painful lump. If it is touched it will hurt for a while and excess pressure can cause it to hurt as well (such as stairs) Is it possible the ankle was partially fractured, and if so, is there anything a dr can do for it now?
