How To Detect Pregnancy?

Hi, i am 25 years old, me and my husband had sex on Monday(25th) and Wednesday(27th), last week only i had my periods, though we had used condom during the intercourse, i am not sure if i have conceived or not. I dont want to get pregnant. I was planning to take an i-pill but not sure if i should or not as i am not sure of my pregnancy. Please tell how will i confirm other than the home test, i had been pregnant sometime back and had gone under an abortion during that time(end of Jan11) . Please suggest what can i do to avoid this as of now. Also if i go for the pills which are to be taken everyday what are the chances of getting pregnant, and will they affect me when i want to get pregnant. Kindly suggest.

Hallow Dear,

After the last sex on 27th, you had your periods. So you are not pregnant. Moreover, all your sexual relations were with condom protection. So you need not worry about pregnancy. However, if you want to have endorsement by some test (other than home test), you may opt for Beta hCG test on blood. This test gives reliable reports if performed 10 days after the last unprotected intercourse. In non-pregnant state, the values are less than 5 mIU/ml while values above 25 mIU/ml are diagnostic of pregnancy.

Madam, I-pill is Plan B emergency post coital contraceptive pill. It should be used only in occasional emergency situation. It has to be consumed within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Its routine use after each intercourse is not recommended.

For routine contraception, you may opt for contraceptive pills. They are very reliable method of contraception having almost nil (less than 0.1%) failure rate. These pills should be taken only with Gynaecologist's advice and prescription. These pills do not have any ill effect on future pregnancies.

Alternatively, you may get intrauterine device inserted which will offer you protection against pregnancy for years to follow.

Condom also is a very effective reliable method of contraception.

If you want to defer your pregnancy for some time, please adopt one (or more) of the above mentioned reliable contraceptive methods. Too frequent use of Plan B contraception is not advisable.

I hope this provides you the required guidance.
