How To Diagnose Ganglion Cysts And Rheumatoid Nodules?

How can you determine the difference between ganglion cyst and RA nodules? I have cyst on every finger of bth hands. None onmy wrists. I am 28 years old. My lab is normal but my PCP and Reumatologist diagnosed me with RA due to symposium and joint damage on X-ray. My rheumatologist retired and today I had an appointment with his replacement. He essentially contradicted everything I have been told thus far.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We have to confirm that whether the swelling is due to rheumatoid nodule or ganglion cyst. Ganglion cyst is harmless and of no clinical significance. However if it is due to rheumatic nodule treatment plan is different. Do pathological analysis of fluid aspirated from the nodule and evaluate. By pathological tests we can easily differentiate between the two. If the report comes as ganglion, consult an orthopedic and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
