How To Diagnose Gastrointestinal Issues In The Elderly?

My otherwise healthy 74-year-old mother is visiting and the guest room always smells like Bandaids. Could this be a sign of illness? She s had some gastrointestinal issues while visiting as well. She is thin and doesn t eat much but that is how she has always been. She does like sweets. No other health problems that we know of besides hearing loss.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms can be related to a gastrointestinal infection. I suggest doing a stool test for a bacterial infection and for a fungal infection.
Meanwhile, I suggest to give her daily probiotics and eat a healthy diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
