Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Firstly, pain-killers is ONLY a symptomatic treatment of pain. More important is to treat the root cause of pain so as to get permanent relief.

At 63 years age, the possibilities are osteoporosis with osteoarthritis, discs protrusion in the lower spine, thereby pinching on the lower limbs' nerves or, a joint disease.

In case of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, a regular dose of adequate Calcium + Vitamin D3 (0.5 - 1.0 mcg) will steadily reduce the pain to the extent that you will no longer require pain-killers.

In case of pinched nerves, nerves-induced pain killers, such as Gabapentin or carbamazepine along with 1500mcg of Vitamin B12 will be very effective.

Get your Bone Densitometry test (for osteoporosis); MRI of lower spine (for discs protrusion; Blood Vitamin D and B12 levels; and, thyroid hormone test (to rule out/detect thyroid problem) done.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable/modified treatment as advised.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
