Hi I am 58 years. I have had melasma for the past 12-15 years. I have tried a range of products and home remedies but with no results. I have also had chemical peels done on my face. I have the melasma on both my cheeks right up to the corner of my eyes on both sides of my face and on my forehead. I have generally good skin, no breakouts but a bit oily.
I would like your expert advice on how I can rid or minimize the dark patches
Melasma is a difficult condition to cure. It can recur once treated and sometimes it might not go away completely, though much improved, even with treatment.
If I was your treating doctor I would have advised you to use a broad spectrum sunscreen, that which offers both UVA and UVB protection, throughout the day. Sun protection is an essential part of melasma treatment.
A skin lightening cream containing one or more of the skin lightening agents e.g Kojic acid, hydroquinone, Glycolic acid can be used once or twice daily. A triple combination cream containing tretinoin+hydroquinone+fluocinolone acetonide can be used initially for 1-2 months for faster results, but only under the supervision of a dermatologist before switching to kojic acid/hydroquinone or glycolic acid containing cream.
Chemical peel sessions can be spaced appropriately in order to avoid irritation when on topical treatment for melasma
