Hi dear Engineer,
You are having trouble leaving tobacco and alcohol. Along with that you are stressed of unemployment and so have been loosing confidence in yourself.
Stress and depressive disorder both can perpetuate the addictive behaviour and make it difficult to leave.
What exactly is making you not to continue in a job is not specified. So its difficult to tell is addiction causing
depression or depression leading to addiction. Both could be a possibility.
It might be that you are having some other problems like high impulsive behaviour or
anxiety symptoms.
These all could be evaluated only during a assessment. I believe you might be around an able
psychiatrist. Whatever the treatment is it takes lots time, may be months together.
Drugs along with
psychotherapy always gives the best result in case of de-addiction. Avoidance of work will no help, but coping with the stressors will be best.
So my suggestion is to stick on with a psychiatrist and get psychotherapy by a clinical
psychologist. Learn better coping skills and skills to be abstinent during psychotherapy. Take medicines to decrease the sadness, anxiety, impulsiveness and craving of tobacco and alcohol. Remain motivated for at least few months and persist with the treatment. Gradually get on to work. I strongly believe you can get out of the current situation happily. All the best.
