How To Get Rid Of Ear Infection?

Age: 23
Height: 175cm
Weight: ~85kg

Hi, I am currently experiencing an ear infection from a recent cold. These seem to happen for most of the colds I have, and from speaking to others these shouldn't be so common. Initially my ear becomes very painful, for 1-2 hours or more. From 1-10 I'd say the pain would be a 9. After this it feels very congested for a few days, and I can often hear the fluid sloshing around within the ear. If I turn my head sideways I can sometimes hear the fluid draining. Also there can be some fluid discharge from the ear.

This particular infection I have now is a little stranger than usual however, when I swallow I can still hear the 'click' which to my knowledge means the eustachian tube is clear? However, the ear still feels congested as if the fluid cannot drain.

I've experienced these for as long as I can remember, so I assumed it was normal. These occur about 2-3 times a year. Does this sound normal or should I consider seeing an ENT specialist?

Thanks

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain clogging and congestion in ear after a bout of cold and feeling of fluid moving inside the ear seems to be most probably due to fluid accumulation behind the eardrum and blocked eustachian tube..
It can occur after a bout of cold as the ear and throat are connected via Eustachian tube ..

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like x ray, MRI, otoscopy etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised a course of antibiotics, oral as well as nasal decongestants like Xylometazoline nasal sprays.
Along with it steam inhalation and chewing chewing gum can help..
In case of no improvement in 15 days surgical drainage by making a small incision through the eardrum can help..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
