My wife recently had cortizone shots in her L4 L5 disks and has suffered migraines ever since. It has been almost a month now and her doctor seemed to be dumbfounded with no answer. Now she is sick all the time and in constant pain with her back and migraines. She already takes percisets and oxycotyn for pain but it does very little for her. Any suggestions on how she can get rid of her migraines? she is already taking Rizatriptan for her migraines but they are constant and make her feel terrible. Also how long will this last?
There is no reason for there to be new onset migraines after lumbar shots, it is not a common side effect of the procedure.
The only possible explanation to connect the headaches with the procedure would be if there was a puncture in the dura layer leading to a leak in cerebrospinal fluid ( a very rare complication).
For that reason an MRI must be performed, not only of the head but also lumbar region to check for cerebrospinal fluid leakage, if present a blood patch, injection of blood, seals the leak.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
