How To Heal The Sprained Ankle With Pain And Bruise?

I tripped down the steps and sprained my left ankle 4 days ago. I've been elevating it, icing it, and using an Ace bandage when I walk. I can't stay off it, and I had to shovel snow today. It's still sort of painful and the bruise above my ankle bone (on the outside of the leg) is getting larger, not shrinking. I'm 99.9% sure it's not fractured (not painful enough). If I go to the doctor, will she tell me to do anything different than I'm already doing? How long does it typically take to heal?
