Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
just got my blood work back total cholesterol 270 hdl 115 Ldl 141 trigliserides 70 healthy 50 year old women enter menopause only family history dad had heart attack at 64 he survived and has a history of high cholesterol he is very active what do you think i need to go on a statin or what
It appears as if you may have inherited a cardiac gene from your family. Your doctor may want to put you on a statin. You should also exercise 150 minutes per week routinely, and change your diet permanently to one high in soluble fibers, omega-3 fatty acids, lower fat intake to 27%, lower saturated fat intake, try to eliminate trans fat, increase virgin olive oil and canola oil, choose lean cuts of meat. Your question was about going on a statin. Yes, despite your very good HDL, based on your total cholesterol, your LDLs along with family history, I would say a statin is a good choice. However, only your doctor can decide that based upon all your risk factors and levels of lipids over time. Thanks for coming to HCM. Please visit again and take care. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
