Hi Doctor, My wife had Pap smear and she received the following report 1st time. Smears show predominately superficial cells and intermediate cells in a dense inflammatory background with sheets of polymorps masking the mprpholey of cells Dense inflammatory smear Then she had antiboitic and did the second test. The same result as above has come. Doctor has advised for scanning. She is 46 years old . Please let me know how to interpret this result
Pap smear is the screening test for cervical cancer. your first result is suggestive of acute infllammation. but the problem is that the acute inflammatory cells, e.g. polymrphs are so plenty that they obstruct the view of squamous cells. so you should repeat the test afeter clearing of infection. After treatment of infection also you have same result. it means your infection is not treated yet. now you have two option. either go for repeat treatment. or go for cervical biopsy. biopsy is more accurate in dignosis of cervical cancer.
