Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Doctor, I am a 48 year old woman, this past Fri, I was checked and my readings were 170/90 bp. It will be 1 week today that I have cut my salt intake and fast paced walked daily for 45 min. Today s reading is 158/85. Does this mean that I m on the right tract? I will be checked next week and my goal is to not take bp medication. How long do you think I should have to see if I can maintain my blood pressure level. Before the doctor recommends meds? thanks Trish!
In your age you have low risk if there are no additional risk factors. In this case you can try lifestyle changes during 6 months before starting medications. If you can achieve normal BP data with only lifestyle changes you will not need any medications. Besides restricting salt, you should exercise and try to lose weight if you are overweight.
Wish you good health
