I am a 54 year old female and weigh 178 pounds and I am 5 4 . My last ferritin level was 231. Up from 174. TIBC was 300 Iron 117. Iron Sat was 39. Hgb was 13.4. Should I be alarmed with my ferritin level. Is there any way to lower it? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Among the parameters you mentioned, ferritin level is high, while all others are with in normal limits. Do you have any history of recurring fever / joint pains / rashes in body?

Ferritin is an inflammatory marker. Apart from its use in disorders of iron metabolism, ferritin is also used in diagnosis and follow up of chronic inflammatory conditions. High ferritin can thus suggest active inflammation in our body. Kindly discuss with your doctor.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
