Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Statins When I take cholesterol lowering medications I get severe myalgia after about six weeks. I have stopped taking them about twelve months ago and now have muscle aches, weakness and severe fatigue. I have made substantial lifestyle changes aimed at getting my cholesterol levels down but have achieved minimal benefit. I am a 54 year old male. Ken Long
Thank you for asking on HCM! I understand your concern.
I would like to explain that statins side effects usually vanish up to some weeks after interrupting these drugs and do not occur again (the body gets used to them).
I would recommend you to perform routine blood test and muscular enzymes (CPK) plasma levels to examine your muscular system and consider the possibility to restart the statins. An electromyography may be necessary for this purpose.
I would also advise you to change your diet (avoid fatty food and take plenty of omega3 and fibers, vegetables, etc).
Physical activity would also help in decreasing the levels of cholesterol.
Hope to have been helpful!
Greetings! Dr. Iliri
