How To Overcome Severe Knee Pain Post Arthroscopic Surgery?

In September 2012 I have orthorscopic surgery on my left knee for a torn meniscus (exterior). I recently went back to my surgeon as I was suffering from a constant ache and my knee would lock, he sent me for an MRI which revealed that I am bone on bone and the only fix is a knee replacement. As I am only turning 50 this year my surgeon would like to wait until I am at least 55. The pain sometimes is excrutiating and ibuprofen does not seem to be helping, it is even worse when the weather is really cold, what can you suggest?
