Ok.... you can't lie and have a supportive environment.
Smoking is not just prohibited by your mother but a really bad idea for your health. Merely saying, yes, you are addicted and need help will very likely overcome everything else in the relationship with parents. You show good insight into the relationship between esteem and addictive behaviors.
The addictions of smoking, marijuana, and food have some fundamental brain structures in common and the esteem and secrecy issues and social isolation keeping you stuck, but also all differ in many important respects.
Marijuana is likely illegal. That has serious ramifications and will lead to consequences that are going to be hard to overcome. Tobacco can kill you in short order.
Tobacco is alone in being predominantly addictive due to cravings and not having all that much of a reward sensation per se. There is a peak of withdrawal effects in the first week and it rapidly tapers off after that for the withdrawal, but the psychological triggers last a very long time.
so.... here's what to do!
1) have a gun to your head. If someone does not have a huge immediate reason to quit, they won't. Extremely few 17 yr olds have as strong desire to quit as you do. Extremely few have reasons as strong as you do.
(check).
2) Consult with a physician in YOUR case about
nicotine replacement. Generally, this is the second most important feature and doubles the likelihood of quitting immediately. Generally, people do not have a complicated medical history that makes any nicotine very dangerous. I cannot say in your particular situation.
3) It's all milleau. Vietnam veterans quitting
heroin... 90%, heroin addicts in intensive group/family 12 step programs... 50-70%, those going it alone.. 25%... success rate in tobacco generally... 25%. Making your own milleau supporting quitting:
first, you need to involve family (and doctors)
second, set a quit date, get all secret stashes out at or before the quit date.
Consider having a party.(first time I've suggested that; it's appropriate).
Then... make your own milleau. You'll hear about this method. I came up with ... I modernized it. When this works YOU can be the first to hear where it really came from. Here it is.
Get stickers, gold stars, or flourescent sticky notes. Whenever there is a trigger and you don't smoke, put up a marker on top of the trigger. The triggers connection to the brain circuits cannot be removed. They can (literally) be papered over.
Having lost nearly 15% weight this year, I have other info on
weight loss. but that would be another dedicated question.
