I have been told that the production of thyroxine is now eratic, its no longet triggered by the brain and hence the gland will be worked out and will need to be on chronic medication. THe level of hormones at this time are within range so no need for treatment. My question is "what can I do to minimise the gland from wearing out?"
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Could you please provide the values of your last thyroid blood test. Did you have your thyroid antibodies measured or an ultrasound done. If done, what did the ultrasound show. The cause of thyroid dysfunction need to be found out.
Only then, your question can be answered completely. However, in most cases, once a destruction process starts in thyroid, external interface will have minimal impact. However, selenium supplementation and sufficient dietary iodine intake may help to retain the thyroid functions in some cases.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
