How To Quit Habit Of Smoking?

Good evening,

My dad is 38 and has been smoking since he was 18. This is really starting to worry me, because the dangers of smoking are high; however, he refuses to see a doctor, and isn't too confident sounding on weather he wants to quit or not. I would like to know how I can get him to quit, what products I could buy, how much of these products to use and which ones can be used at the same times, etc. Also, I was thinking about getting him patches--but, if he decides to smoke while on these patches, what will happen? I heard it's a risk of a heart attack. Please help me, before it's too late.:(

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello Chelsea
Welcome to HCM.
I understand your concerns.
First about the patches, they are safe but caution is advised in those patients who have compromised cardiac status.
There other preparations of nicotine, the gum being mostly used. The dose depend on number of cigarettes smoked. Use 4mg gum if number of cigarettes smoked are more than 25 in a day and use 2mg if less than 25.
The drugs available are bupropion and varenicline.
You can consult a psychiatrist for a suitable de-addiction regime for your father.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
