How To Recover From Addition Of Excedrin?

My son is addicted to excedrin, taking about 12 a day. Doctor has prescribed other medicine for his migraines, but says it does not work for him. My question is can I get a placebo for excedrin. I honestly don t think it s doing anything for him if he has to take that many. I believe he doesn t have headaches. He takes the pills as preventive, like taking vitamins.

Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I read your question carefully and would explain that Excedrin is not a preventive therapy for migraine.

It contains acetaminophen (or tylenol) and aspirin, which are paikillers and caffeine, which is normally contained in coffee.

It is not recommended to take it regularly as it can lead to daily induced headache, causing further aggravation of the headaches.

I would recommend discussing with his attending physician the possibility of starting a preventive therapy like an antidepressant (amytriptiline), a calcium channel blocker (verapamil) or a betablocker (propranolol), which would lead to a reduce in the headache frequency and severity and gradually stop the intake of excedrin.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!
Kind regards,
Dr. Aida
