I am in my 60s and cramps run in my family. Lately they seem to be more severe and leave me so tired, I am in even getting them above the stomach and in the back. Not really taking anything for them as I have found nothing has worked, do not want to try Quinine incase of the side effects, can you recommend something Cheers

Hi,

Abdominal and back cramps can have various causes, including muscle fatigue, dehydration, and underlying medical conditions such as kidney stones or digestive issues. Some remedies can be followed to reduce any discomfort:
* Stay hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of water and fluids to avoid dehydration, which can cause muscle cramps.
* Stretching exercises: Stretching can help to relax the muscles and relieve tension. Regular stretching exercises can also help prevent future cramps.
* Warm compresses: Applying a warm compress to the affected area can help to relieve muscle tension and reduce cramps.
* Over-the-counter pain relief: If the cramps are severe, you may try over-the-counter pain relief medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
* Massage: Massaging the affected area can help to relieve muscle tension and reduce cramps.
* Consult a healthcare professional: If the cramps persist or are accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, it is best to consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and treatment.

It is also important to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, including regular exercise, to prevent cramps and promote overall health.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
