How To Reduce Pain And Swelling In Tooth Having Root Canal?

I have a tooth that has a root canal and has an infection. I have been on antibiotics and diclofenac for 4 days now but i still have severe pain and swelling. What is your advice? also I am wondering how the pus from the infection drains out? will it come out on it's own or do i need to visit a dentist to drain it?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain pain and swelling in tooth that has undergone root canal treatment if re-infected then many a times mild infections can be treated with antibiotics and painkillers..

But in case if there is pus formation leading to dental abscess formation and if the antibiotics and not able to cure the infection then in that case you need to get the root canal filling removed from the root canals, followed by cleaning of the root canals and then taking a course of antibiotics and painkillers.

When the infection completely subsides and you become completely painless then the re filling of the root canals has to be done..

I would suggest you to consult your dentist and get an x ray done and in case tooth can be saved the above explained procedure has to be done and in case if the tooth cannot be saved extraction is advisable..

Hope this information helps..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of pain and swelling in tooth having root canal is because of presence of infection in tooth underlying area . You underwent root canal therapy and massive instrumentation for the same but infection was not subsided before start of treatment.

I would suggest you to take all preventive measures given by dentist. Complete your antibiotic course. Do betadine and warm saline gargles. If your symptoms still persisting i would suggest you to visit dentist again and get IOPA done because infection is still there and get redone the procedure. Some times filling start putting pressure on root area so get the procedure redone. Maintain proper oral hygiene.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
