How To Reduce Swelling In Feet And Ankles?

Hi my brother had surgery back in October and is still recovering having encountered complications post surgery, ie pneumonia. Now nutrition issues ie not gaining weight so on a special diet. Now however his feet and ankles are swollen and the doctors can't seem to advise what to do to reduce the swelling. Any advice?
