Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I accidentally got bengay in my mouth last night, but did not swallow any. I immediately rinsed and washed my mouth out, but it burned for a little bit afterward and now my sense of taste is dulled quite a bit. Should I be worried, and what should I do?
I have gone through your health query and can very well understand your concerns..
Bengal is a topical analgesic containing which has a main ingredient as Methyl Salicylate and accidental intake in mouth has lead to "CHEMICAL BURN" on tongue due to which there is inflammation on tongue and inflammation of taste buds leading to alteration or reduced taste sense..
I would suggest you that if there is only a little redness on tongue you can suck on ice pops to reduce inflammation.. You can drink ice cold water and gargle with the same 3 to 4 times a day.. In case of pain you can take OTC painkiller like Paracetamol and Ibuprofen..
In case if there is ulceration of tongue and severe burning you should consult a dentist and get evaluated..
Maintain a good oral hygiene but avoid alcohol containing mouthwashes as they can cause burning...
Wishing you a good health..
Thanks and regards..
