Hello,

Since he is having discomfort due to fluid retention and the treating doctors as per your information have ruled our diabetes and heart issues, you are suggested to let him get examined by a nephrologist. Venous insufficiency, varicose veins, liver and kidney diseases may present with such symptoms. Get him urinalysis, blood, kidney and liver function tests done.

His treating doctor may recommend imaging tests or biopsy to be done to detect the pathology causing him discomfort. He will be treated accordingly. He should take well balanced diet, salt and sugar in limited amounts. Avoid addictions if any. Avoid standing in the same position for a long time. Once the pathology is detected and treatment started the fluid in the legs will get reduced. When on bed he should keep his foot on a pillow & while sitting on a stool.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
