How To Take Care Of A Breast Cancer Patient With Double Mastectomy?
Dear Dr. Grief, I will be taking care of a close friend next week who will be recovering from a double mastectomy surgery. She is having the surgery tomorrow and I will be the second shift of friends coming to take care of her. I live in Boston and she lives in Atlanta. Anyway, I was wondering what might be good for me to know or expect in taking care of her needs. Any suggestions on what I should read before I assume this role as her care taker? Any specific websites to check out. I have looked at some. I have a family history of breast cancer, so I have seen my mother and sister deal with this disease many years ago when I was younger, but now I will be a temporary care taker and would like to help my friend as much as possible. Thanks, Sheila
Hi Thanks for your query. Mastectomy is not a difficult surgery. Of course, two sides at a time adds up the problems. It is expected that she may have some pain for few days, this settles with analgesics. Also, the drains will be removed approx a week later. After that there may be some fluid collections which may need to be drained. Follow all the instructions of the surgical team, that is most important. Hope this helps. Regards
