How To Take Care Of Someone With The Flu?

My father has diabetes and he has been living with a brain aneurysm for years. The flu had been going around our house, and even though he has had the flu shot, he got the bug from us. He has been throwing up and I was just wondering if there is any special instructions that we should follow. He is a tad stubborn and keeps saying he s fine and won t go in. Any answer will help. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern.

Would you please clarify a few things for me?

-did all of you have the stomach flu or a cold?
-does he complain of any headaches or dizziness?
-does he have a fever? Any other symptoms like loose stools?stomach pain? Sore throat?
-does he have any other medical issues? Other than diabetes or aneurysm?
- what medications is he on?

I recommend :
-home care
-rest, proper and adequate Hydration and nutrition.
-if temperature is more than 100f, paracetamol /acetaminophen 500mg as and when needed.
-steam inhalations can help relieve nasal and sinus Congestion, if present.
-a soft, bland diet. Smaller but frequent (every 3 hours) will help keep energy levels stable
These measures should help him cope with the flu and recover in 7-10 days.

However, if he has a severe cough, he should consult his doctor. Coughing can increase pressure in the brain can threaten the rupture of the aneurysm.
Home remedies for cough include ginger cough drops or an Infusion of black/green tea, ginger (dry or fresh), fennel seeds and honey to taste..

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you all good health.
