How To Treat UTI While On Insulin In The Elderly?

86 yo dad has diabetes, bs was 87 tonight 5 minutes after eating supper. He doesn t normally take insulin, but just came home from a week in the hospital with a uti/sepsis, and is on 10 mg humulin in the morning. We gave him a spoonful of peanut butter and a fun sized chocolate. Will that hold him till morning?

Hi,

Cannot say in his particular case. Certainly, my sugar at 90 isn't an issue, but I am not diabetic. 10 unit of humulin is an absolute minimal dose. With normal food intake that amount would be fine generally. Rarely a sugar of 87 would indicate a large problem (if someone's sugar is almost always over 300).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
