How To Treat A Growth On The Neck?

My 20 year old son has a growth on the back of his neck that has been there since he was approximately 9 years old.Every time it was brought to the attention of a doctor they dismissed it like it was nothing,well now he is complaining that it is swelled ,has fever and hurts pretty bad.So what could it be. I am concerned it could be cancerous and if it had been treated when first brought to the attention of health professionals he would not be having the pain and trouble he is now.Am I worrying for nothing? what could this be?

please dont worry , the swelling is unlikley to be cancer since it has been there for so many years , i have not examined your son and i would like you to upload a picture of the swelling/growth so that i am in a better position to help you.
