Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Dear Doctor :) I have an injury at my ring finger. A ball hit my finger my while I was training for an upcoming tournament; I play basketball. I have already consulted 3 doctors here in the Philippines. The first doctor said it was a Mallet Finger , then he referred me to a hand surgeon because according to him he can t fix it and the results will be not that good. The second doctor (the hand surgeon) said that the only way to fix it was by finger joint fusion . I didn t want to fuse the bones together because it will really affect my performance and I really wanted to get into rock climbing and fusing the two bones together would make my dream to climb rocks impossible. I was devastated by their words, and I was hoping there would be another way to fix it. My question is, is there another way to fix it other than this so called fusion ? I don t blame anyone but myself, this injury occurred last September 2015 but I only went to a doctor last January 2016. Best Regards, Marvin Ignacio 18
Hi, thanks for asking, treatment for mallet finger comes when more than 30% of articulating surface is involved. if you are unable to extend the finger then better to go to hand surgeon. The options for surgery are fixing distal inter phalangeal joint or wiring the joint. If wiring done there is a scope of movement at joint. In your case you went late but its good you have gone to a doctor.
