Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Our nurse practitioner recommended that my 89 year old dad use a warm rice bag soak on a scab in his ear. (He scratched his ear inside on day and skin broke open and bled off and on for 3 days before creating a scab.) Now the scab is raised up and the area around it is dark red in color. The soreness has decreased but I m very concerned. He is being referred to the dermatologist who recently did surgery on two skin cancer spots on his forehead. How do we do this warm rice bag soak to loosen the scab? The rice bags I ve seen are too big to fit in his ear.
This suggests a secondary infection over the wound. Just clean the area with warm saline 3 times daily and apply an antibiotic cream like Neosporin. If no improvement in 2 days, we will need oral antibiotics in addition, for which your doctor will guide
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
