How To Treat A Wound On The Chin Of A Toddler?

My 1 1/2 yr old son fell tonight before bed and put his bottom teeth through the part above his chin and below his lip. I used my first aid kit and cleaned it with one of the wipes provided as well as he would allow me to and then applied triple antibiotic ointment. Should I have taken him to get stitches? It didn’t bleed long and after I cleaned the area it looked to be about a quarter to a half inch long. I’m regretting that I didn’t take him right away, but then I thought to myself “well ppl got holes in that area for rings.” so I didn’t think at the time it was a big deal, which is why I took care of it myself the best I could. But now I’m laying in bed unable to sleep because I’m afraid maybe I should have. Are you able to tell me if I should take him to have stitches? And if not then how should I care for his wound? I don’t want it to get infected.

Hello,

As per your query, your child has symptoms of the wound on the chin which is due to tearing off skin and inflamed underlying area. The area will take around a week to heal. I would suggest you to :
- Mix hydrogen peroxide with an equal amount of water and then rinse mouth with it.
- Apply benzocaine gel on it before having a meal.
- Maintain proper oral hygiene.
- Avoid hot and spicy food.

If the wound doesn't start getting improve in 3-4 days or get worse then consult oral surgeon or dentist. The doctor examines the wound physically, may give stitches if the wound is large, wash it with betadine and prescribe antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
