How To Treat An Injured Finger?

About six weeks ago, I fell on the stairs, breaking that fall with my left hand. I think I probably sprained the middle finger. There has been a lot of swelling and pain...and even today, my middle knuckle is red, swollen and very sore, even to the touch. How should I treat this? Thanks much for your assistance.
