My husband has been getting blisters to pop up on both of his hands for no reason, then they turn into sores. He has been using polysporin, alcohol and perioxide, but nothing seems to be helping. It is on the backside of his hands and knukles. Can you help?

Hi,

Your symptoms might be due to "Dyshidrotic eczema", a condition which causes development of small fluid-filled blisters across the fingers, palms and soles. These blisters will dry and become scaly & can recur. It affects people under 40 years of age. It occur along with atopic dermatitis or hay fever or under stress, in contact with cement, metals, such as chromium, cobalt, or nickel etc. I advise you to use:
1. Topical creams: tacrolimus or pimecrolimus.
2. Moisturize your hands with petroleum jelly (lotion, cream, or ointment)
3. If itching or allergy: oral antihistamines and oral / topical cortico-steroid cream can be taken
4. coal tar preparations, photo-therapy etc in severe cases

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya Vasudevan, General & Family Physician
