How To Treat Cough, Sore Throat And Laryngitis?

Have had a cough, slight sore throat and laryngitis for the past 7 days. Probably picked it up being around grandchild and another member of the family who did a lot of coughing when they stayed with us over the holidays. Have been taking Ibuprofen and OTC chest congestion relief DM ( CVS brand Guaifenesin 400mg and Dextromethorphan HBr 20 mg). I have been trying to rest my voice and have been drinking a lot of hot tea. I have no fever, chills or body aches. My appetite is good and I am not feeling fatigued. I know with a virus you have to let it run its course but is there anything else I can do for this. Plus I have been sleeping with double pillows as this seem to decrease the night time coughing a bit. Would appreciate any guidance on regaining my health. Thank you, Marian

Hi,

Can be probably a superseded bacterial infection along with viral.

So my suggestion is to once get a throat swab culture done to rule out the exact cause of the symptoms.

In case if there is bacterial infection you can be advised antibiotics like Augmentin OR Azithromycin to resolve the infection.

-Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be taken to relieve pain. Continue taking Cough suppressant and expectorant combination as you are already taking the same.
-Doing warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and using a humidifier in your room can be very much relieving.
-You can also suck throat lozenges to soothe the throat.
-Gargle with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine.
-Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water.
-Chew Vitamin C pellets to boost up the immunity.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
