How To Treat Eczema In Feet And Palm Despite Using Cortisone And Salicylic Acid?

A dermatologist diagnosed me with eczema. I have it on the soles of my feet mainly but can flare up a bit on the palms of my hands. Have been trying to treat what I thought was a stubborn case of Athlete s Foot to no avail for around 4 months. Freezing boots/shoes etc. but is seems that was never the issue. Dermatologist gave me some cortisone cream to be applied twice a day and some sort of salicylic acid combined with some sort of softening agent to be applied 3 times a day.I ve had a very stressful last 10 months, mother dying, sister behaving like an insane person (my diagnosis!), brother lovely and thinks she s mad too. It s something that will eventually be resolved through solicitors but of course this is not an easy time.I also have been trying to lose some weight, around 10 kgs, and am using Optifast bars combined with low carb diet.I m mildly asthmatic, of the bronchial throat clearing type - not restricted breathing type. My skin is sensitive to chlorine in water so we have whole house filter system to remove at point of use. Very highly chlorinated water in Sydney, Australia. My question is, can this type of eczema be caused by diet? I m trying to figure out what started it and what I can do to reduce flare up.Is it worth having allergy skin testing done?

Hi,

Eczema can have a variety of triggers, including stress, environmental factors, and dietary factors. While it is possible that your eczema could be related to your diet, it is also possible that it is related to other factors such as stress or exposure to irritants. Allergy skin testing may help identify any specific triggers that could be contributing to your eczema.

In addition to using cortisone and salicylic acid, other treatments may be effective for eczemas, such as moisturizers, antihistamines, and phototherapy. It is important to work closely with your dermatologist to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs and addresses all potential contributing factors. Additionally, managing stress levels and avoiding exposure to irritants can also help manage eczema symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
