How To Treat Headaches And Pain In Neck And Shoulders Despite On Co-codamol?

Hello, I have been in a car accident, being hit from behind. I was okay for a few days and then developed a horrible headache. Took paracetamol but it didn t help. Then developed pain in my neck, back and right arm with tingling/numbness in both hands. Went to doctor and was prescribed co-codamol and anti-inflamatory cream. My physiotherapist (from GP) gave advice and exercises which I have tried to follow. I now have pain from neck to both shoulders and down my right arm, fore arm and hand, still tingling/numbness in both hands and cannot lift anything with right arm outstretched without pain. I also have scoliosis and worry it will be affected but nobody seems concerned. I also have tingling on my face but not sure if this is connected. I am in uk

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
hi,

Thank you for providing the brief history of you.

As per understanding your history what i understand is First thing you need an MRI of the cervical spine, since you have had a car accident hit from behind. To understand that the cervical spine is in danger if anything is hitting from behind. You were suppose to be recommended to under go and MRI of the Cervical spine and negligence is not recommended. I am not able to understand why your symptoms are taken lightly when the symptoms are strong.

Also, the tingling, numbness, pain in shoulders are strong indicative of the cervical spine injury and needs attention.

Post an MRI of the cervical spine, the extent of the soft tissue injury is understood and the next rehabilitation plan is programmed accordingly.

Also, the physiotherapist you been meeting may not be strong enough to understand the extent of the injury and the requirement of the program for you in specific. Using the traditional way to help your case might not be successful.

To help you further i will recommend the following -
1. Straight MRI of the Cervical spine
2. Rest - if injury on MRI is more, avoid travelling and jerking the head
3. Physical therapy - Therapeutic Ultrasound and TENS therapy.
4. Wait - how the pain, tingling and numbness symptoms are there

Post this we can plan further.

5. Program exercises to strengthen the neck muscles which have various efforts to put into, not the traditional exercises mentioned on google or in some books.

6. Strengthen the Shoulder and upper back.

The recovery is totally dependable on the MRI can report and the best Physical therapist you have to help you.

I am have myself seen many cases, but never i have been negligent in utilizing the technology. MRI helps in most cases and my all cases have 99% recovery. No cortisone, no surgery, only proper program and they all are having a wonderful normal life.

I wish you the same and still recommend do not be negligent, kindly take an MRI of the Cervical spine, Since you read more on internet about whiplash injury and it will help you understand better why am i being serious in your case.
