How To Treat Hypothyroidism?

Hi My wife was diagnosed with hypoithyroidism one and three quarters years ago. her doctor tried her on 50mcg of levo and she started having severe pain in the abdomen also with severe fatigue and numbness. Her Doctor gave 100mcg but this made no difference to her symptoms, she also started having severe problems with mobility and was admitted to our local hospital the Endo on the ward changed my wiife's dose to 75-50mcg alternating but this did not make any difference, following some tests which proved negative she was discharged. She was admitted again a month or so later but no cause could be found for her symptoms. I asked her endo to carry out a tpo and two days later he increased her dose to 125mcg. Originally my wife was told she had primary Hypothyroidism but on a recent appointment with her Endo he told her she had thyroiditis

Hello,
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
I read carefully your query and I am trying to give you some more information about thyroiditis and primary hypothyroidism.
One of the main causes of primary hypothyroidism is chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or Hashimoto thyroiditis. This is a very common pathology especially at females. So primary hypothyroidism and Hashimoto thyroiditis are practically the same.
The main treatment of primary hypothyroidism is the hormonal replacement therapy (levothyroxine) in order to correct the hormonal level.
Once the hormonal level is corrected, the symptoms will disappear if they are due to hypothyroidism. In general levothyroxine does not have side effect, but you have to check the hormonal level until you find the proper dose of levothyroxine.
Hope this information will help you somewhat.
Kind regards,
Dr.M.Guni
