Hi Doctors, my wife is 6 weeks pregnant.Last week we consulted our gync last week. She mentioned my wife had ovarian cyst size of 5cm. doctor mentioned we have to wait until 7th week, after that she will do first scan and check baby heart beat. my question is what is ovarian cyst ? is it serious for baby growth? how it can be removed? Please clarify me.
The possible causes of the ovarian cyst you mentioned are: -During early pregnancy sometimes Corpus luteum of pregnancy develops in the ovary, which helps in producing the hormones, that will help in maintaining the pregnancy till the placenta takes over the function. -Simple ovarian cysts containing clear fluid -Rarely ectopic pregnancy can also present as an ovarian cyst.
Now in your next scan: *If the size of the ovarian cyst is decreasing no need to worry. It will not affect the baby's growth. *If the size of ovarian cyst is same you may need to follow up with a monthly ultrasound examinations * If the size of the ovarian cyst is increasing, and leading to pain it may need to removed preferably in the second trimester.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
