How To Treat Pic Line Insertion Mediated Congestion And Chest Pain?
I was in the hospital five days for pain control from a fall shortly after back surgery. I had a pic line and as soon as it was inserted felt the need to cough something up like I was congested. I told myself I was being a hypochondriac and to let it go. The pic was removed three days ago when I was released but I feel a bit congested and am having some chest pain. Do you think I've any cause for concern? Thank you. I feel silly asking. Jenny
The picc line can act as a source of infection, most commonly Nosocomial (Hospital acquired) infection. Since you are feeling congested & having chest pain, a Lower Respiratory Tract Infection can be suspected. Investigations like complete blood count, X ray of chest & blood culture will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.
Management involves: 1.Antihistamine preparations like Allegra. 2. Cough expectorant syrup for symptomatic relief. 3. A course of antibiotics may be taken to prevent secondary bacterial attack. 4. Maintain adequate hydration & take a healthy balance diet. 5. Also make sure that you are well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.
So, kindly consult your treating Physician for proper clinical examination & start the treatment as advised. Wishing you a good health. Take care.
