How To Treat Recurrent UTI In A Diabetic Patient?

My husband is 89 years old and currently is in rehab for a urinary tract infection. He has a bladder catheter and has had 3 UTI s in the last 2 months. He still has his prostate, but I have heard that removing the prostrate could solve these problems. He is also a type 2 diabetic.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Urinary tract infections are the commonest bacterial infection in older people and the risk increases with age. Predisposing factors in old age include diabetes, urinary tract stones, steroid use, urinary catheter and chronic illness impairing immune system. Prostate problem causes retention of urine which predisposes to infection. Removal of prostate will solve the problem.
Advice
1.     Ciprofloxacin 500 mg every 12 hours for 7 days
2.     Change catheters regularly
3.     Contact your surgeon for surgery
4.     Drink plenty of water to flush out bacteria
5.     Drink cranberry juice
6.     Investigations
a.     R/E of urine
b.     C/S of urine
c.     Serum PSA
d.     USG abdomen & pelvis
Change antibiotic after C/S report of urine.
If recurrence still occurs despite above measures then cefalexin 125 mg daily per oral may be taken for 6 months as prophylactic treatment.
Thanks
